What Bike and Build is all about...

Bike and Build is a non-profit organization that raises money and awareness for the affordable housing crisis through the arrangement of cross-country biking trips. The organization primarily engages college students ages 18-25 on 8 different routes. Specifically, Bike and Build attempts to engage young adults in a life-long commitment to service and philanthropy by providing participants with a very intimate approach to the affordable housing crisis. For more information about the organization, check out their website at www.bikeandbuild.org.

Also, a very big thank you to everyone who donated to the cause. Each rider is required to raise a minimum of $4,000 and my current total is $6,770! Thank you again for your support!

Rest in Peace Paige Hicks

On Tuesday July 20th, we were riding through the Rosebud Indian
reservation between Winner, SD and Martin, SD when Paige was struck
and killed by an 18 wheeler carrying an oversized load. Paige and her
riding partner Brittany were on sweep that day and they were
approximately 70 miles through the 100+ mile day when they suddenly
got service. (AT&T has horrible service and it was very exciting to
come to the top of the hill to get text messages. Many of us, myself
included stopped to check our phones.)

They pulled off on the shoulder with Brittany in the grass just off
the road. Neither of them saw the truck approaching behind them. Since
the load was 17 feet wide in a 12 foot lane it stuck out just far
enough to catch Paige. Paramedics on the scene reported that she felt
no pain due to the nature of the injury.

She will be forever missed by everyone on the trip as we all love her
very much. Participants in bike and build develop a familial bond with
each other and to see one of our own die felt like losing a sister.
Rest in peace Paige.
